Know About The Real Story, of Laila Majnu

The tale of Laila and Majnu has been one of the fondest love stories in the world, showing devotion of such an order that it even surpasses reason, society, and life itself. Very often, it is likened to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the tragic love story travelled first in the literary tradition of the Arabs and Persians, then South Asia, and was finally integrated into the cultural folklore.

His poems, which lauded Laila, became widely known, and thus, their relationship became public and controversial.

Such a society and love that was not allowed

In their traditional society, love before marriage was a no-no, especially when it was very public. Laila's family looked upon Qays' action as a sign of weakness and, thus, denied the couple's wish to marry. Family reputation and social norms were stronger than the love between the two. Consequently, Laila was not permitted to meet Qays again, and their romance was forcefully terminated.

Majnu’s Transformation

Qays, utterly heartbroken and broken up with Laila, preferred to stay alone and leave the world. He walked the deserts, reciting his verses and living in seclusion. His infatuation with Laila was so deep that people started referring to him as Majnu, which means a man who is driven by love to the extent of losing his sanity. This man was not mad in a physical way but rather in a spiritual one, thus representing total surrender to love.

Laila’s Fate and Tragic End

Under family constraints, Laila was given to another man as a wife. However, she remained emotionally tied to Majnu even during her marriage. Gradually, her health went from bad to worse due to her grief and emotional torment, which ultimately led to her death. When Majnu got the news about Laila’s death, he was totally crushed and is thought to have died shortly after, either from sadness or while mourning at her grave.

The saga of Laila Majnu is still popular today because it offers the vision of love that is pure and selfless, even if the lovers are not physically united.
