Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari (KC) Bio (2026).

Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari was a young and brave officer in the Indian Army who gave up his life at the age of 23 for what became a symbol of selfless leadership and dedication to duty. He was awarded the Kirti Chakra (KC) posthumously, which also stands for the Army’s highest value -- Service Before Self.

Early Life and Education

Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari was born in the city of Ayodhya (which is in Faizabad district, UP) on 4 January 1902 to parents Shri Jang Bahadur Tiwari and Smt. Neeta Tiwari. Also, he had a younger sister.

Raised in a very structured and values-based family setting, which had a great influence on young Shashank’s development of a deep sense of patriotism from a very early age. He aspired to wear the Army uniform and serve the nation. Very focused and determined, he did very well in his studies and at the same time prepared very hard for a career in the defence services.

His effort paid off, which went on to get him AIR 463 in the National Defence Academy (NDA) entrance exam. He enrolled in the 146th NDA course, which was the first major step toward the realisation of his lifetime goal.

Military Training and Commissioning

After which, Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari completed his intense training at the National Defence Academy and later at the Indian Military Academy. He was commissioned into the 1st Battalion of the Sikkim Scouts Regiment on 14 December 2024.

About the Sikkim Scouts

The Sikkim Scouts is a new addition to the Indian Army, which was raised in 2013 and declared operational in 2015. Based on the Ladakh Scouts and Arunachal Scouts, it enrols personnel from high altitude border areas and specialises in:

Border defence

Affiliated to the 11 Gorkha Rifles, this regiment plays a key role in the defence of India’s northern borders.

In 2025, Lieutenant Tiwari joined the Army Service Corps (ASC) for operational experience, which was the start of what was to become an outstanding career.

In 2025, his unit went to the sensitive North Sikkim region at the Indo-China border. That area is known for:

  • Snowbound terrain
  • Extreme cold temperatures
  • High winds and treacherous mountain streams
  • Difficult supply routes

On May 22nd of 2025, Lieutenant Tiwari was given the task of leading a Route Opening Patrol (ROP), which also included snow removal from Bichhu to the Tactical Operating Base at Chu Junction. The mission’s goal was to have safe and open routes for troops and logisticians.

The Incident

  • While crossing a makeshift log bridge over a fast-moving, icy mountain stream, Agniveer Stephan Subba lost his balance and was swept away by the current.
  • Without delay, Lieutenant Tiwari dived into the cold water to rescue his comrade. Naik Pukar Katel also got into the rescue effort. They struggled against the strong current but, in the end, saved Agniveer Subba from danger.
  • During the rescue, Lieutenant Tiwari’s body was among the first to go into the current of the stream. We did put in great effort right away, but he was taken by the current downstream. It was in a large-scale search that followed that we found his body at a distance of almost 800 meters downstream.
  • At age 23, and that too, only six months in.

Kirti Chakra (Posthumous)

For which he showed great bravery, selfless in action, and the perfect sacrifice, Lt. Shashank Tiwari was posthumously given the Kirti Chakra which is the country’s second highest peacetime gallantry award.
