India has reported many a story of IAS and IPS officers who overcame poverty and struggle to attain success. In the case of Ravi D Channannavar, IPS, we see a fine example. His life is a living picture of what it means to be determined, resilient and dedicated to public service.

Ravi D Channannavar – Early Life

Ravi D Channannavar was born on 1st of July in the village of Neelagunda within the locality of Gadag Taluk, Karnataka. His father, Dhyamappa Channannavar, and mother Ratnamma came from a moderate socio-economic background. As a child, the issue of poverty was a large part of their lives.

From a very young age, he was aware of the hard facts of life. In the summertime, he would go to APMC markets and fill chilli bags. Also, it was a practice for us to go to places like Goa and Mangalore and put in manual labour. At times, there was a report that he went days without food.

Despite those struggles, he didn’t give up on education. In Nilgunda, he completed his schooling at a government school and left with distinction. For his pre-university years, he worked as a theatre cleaner and also as a hotel waiter, which also included his studies. He scored 89% in his PU exam and also finished his degree from Karnataka Arts College.

His wife is Dr Triveni Patil.

Struggle and UPSC Journey

Ravi D Channannavar had a hard road to becoming an IPS officer. He was strangled by financial issues, which made his preparation tough. But he did get support from people like businessman Subash Sasvihalli, who stepped in to help with finances for UPSC coaching in Hyderabad. Also, he looks up to Assistant Commissioner M. G. Bilagi for his guidance.

In 2007 May he went to Hyderabad for civil services preparation. With hard work and discipline, he passed the Civil Services Examination in 2008, which also saw him place at All India Rank 703 in his first attempt.

His success stories show that, whatever the situation put forward to him, he succeeded, which is a result of his consistent effort and unshaken self-confidence.

Career as an IPS Officer

Ravi D Channannavar started in 2011 as an Additional Superintendent of Police in Belgaum. Over the years, he has served in many districts, which include:

  • Mysore

He is known for developing what proved to be very effective and pro-people police methods. Also, he had a very disciplined approach, which in turn contributed to his success.
