Born on March 10, 1943, in Karachi, Bina Ramani was the youngest of nine children in a prosperous Sindhi‑Sikh family. Her father swapped their Karachi villa for a Bombay home with a Muslim businessman in the rapidly changing political landscape emerging from the Partition. She attended Queen Mary High School in Bombay before going to study Decorative Arts in London at the London Polytechnic of Art. Early on, her family's jewellery design business aided her development as she learned the nuances of sales, marketing, and design.
Bina had an exciting period of a lifetime experience working in design and hospitality in the 1970s and ’80s, including an engagement with Taj Group in New York; launching fashion studios such as Once Upon a Time in New Delhi and New York, and creating a brand as the “Godmother of Fashion in India.” She opened Delhi’s Tamarind Court Café and also a heritage shopping mall in Hauz Khas Village that she developed, combining boutiques, a spa, a gallery, and a restaurant.
In 2016, at age 73, Bina co-founded Malabar Secrets (Lady Malabar India Pvt Ltd). A wellness FMCG enterprise, they are based in Delhi. As an homage to the spices of Kerala, they make natural tonics, spice extracts, chocolates, spiced honey and pickles. It combines high-end flavours with Ayurvedic knowledge in a delightful range of products; "India in a Bottle" we are calling it.
