Brahmdev Mishra (1917–1975) was an Indian wrestler and politician who was born during the Hindu lunisolar month of Kartika. In the year 1951, he helped establish the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, which later became the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Brahmdev left school after middle school and grew up in a Brahmin family of intellectuals. He developed a skill of reading and interpreting the Sanskrit and the Ramayana.

Brahmdev came from a family of well-known wrestlers in Khajni village, close to Bansgaon tehsil in Gorakhpur. He was influenced by his grandfather, father and his older brothers. He began training in his village's akhara when he was just 7 years old. He left his job in the police force to wrestle full-time. Brahmdev's family includes many elite wrestlers - his nephew, Ramnarayan Mishra, and grandson, Chandraprakash Mishra (aka Gama Pahalwan), who both represented India on international stages.
Brahmdev stood 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighed 120 kg. His rigorous routine included 2,500 squats and 1,500 push-ups within 45 minutes, followed by wrestling sessions with up to 50 wrestlers. Devout in nature, he chanted “Om Shiv” during exercises and ended each session with “Hanuman Namaskar.” He typically wore a dhoti, kurta, and dupatta, with a traditional safa, and was known for his moustache and commanding presence.

His diet was healthy and consisted of ghee, almonds, milk, thandai, and fruits. He was a vegetarian by choice, loved cooking, and ate with others.

He was trained at the Pakkibagh akhara in Gorakhpur and was an advanced disciple of Chandan Singh from Kashmir. He also trained wrestlers in Kolkata. Brahmdev knew all the advanced moves in wrestling, such as nikal, tang, dhank and kalajank.

He fought many great wrestlers in his time, including Surti Singh of Punjab, Dara Singh in Calcutta, and George Constanine of Romania and many others from around the country. Several of the matches he fought were legendary, and he was widely known as a wrestler who never looked up in defeat, thus being knighted a great of Indian wrestling.
