Kim Tae-hyung, widely recognized by his stage name V, is a South Korean vocalist and a member of BTS. He has released three solo tracks to date: “Stigma,” launched in 2016; “Singularity,” in 2018; and “Inner Child,” in 2020—all of which charted on South Korea’s Gaon Digital Chart. In 2023, V finally made his official solo debut with tracks “Love Me Again” and “Rainy Days,” followed by Layover on the 8th of September.

Early Life and Education

Born on the 30th of December, 1995, in Daegu, V was raised in Geochang County as the oldest of three siblings. He aspired to become a professional singer from elementary school, so he started learning saxophone in middle school with encouragement from his father. Eventually, V passed the audition in Daegu and joined Big Hit Entertainment as a trainee. V graduated from Korea Art High School.

Career
2013–present: BTS

V was a BTS ‘secret member’ before. On June 13, 2013, V made his BTS debut, playing ‘No More Dream’ from their album 2 Cool 4 School. Musically, he has released The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 1 in 2015. V was also composer and co-lyricist for his first solo track, “Stigma”.

2016–present: Solo Activities

V made his debut in acting in 2016 Hwarang. In 2019, he released his first solo track titled “Scenery” on BTS’s SoundCloud, followed by “Winter Bear.” In 2020, V contributed “Sweet Night” to the Itaewon Class soundtrack.
Artistry

V’s voice is baritone, praised for the broad range of his vocal skills and richness in tone. His work in tracks like “Stigma” and “Singularity” has been critically acclaimed. His musical sources include jazz and classical music, and his inspiration comes from Bennett, Eric, Studdard and Ruben. He says he has “duality” in his performance technique, which is highly effective for expressing various emotions.

Meaning and Influence

The phrase “I purple you,” coined by V during a 2016 BTS fan gathering, has evolved to become symbolic for the band and its affection for fans. In 2018, it became the most searched keyword in South Korea for five years. He is also an influence for many young K-pop artists.

Personal Life

Since 2018, V has been living in an apartment located in Hannam-dong, Seoul, along with the other BTS members.
