In an era when the digital beats and the whims of music fads take over, we have no one more than Akanksha Grover to be a harbinger of tradition, injecting new life into the centuries-old baithak culture of Hindustani classical music. Her initiative, “ Baithak by Akanksha ”, is a space of intimate rendezvous where music is not only heard but experienced, indiscernible between artist and audience. A Musical Journey Rooted in Tradition
Akanksha made a foray into music and music videos at the tender age of 4, as she was exposed to the management of her mother's singing devotional track. Her professional training began in the sixth form, setting her foundation in classical music nicely. Her obsession for music continued undeterred even while reading a B. Com from Kirori Mal College, Delhi. After graduation, she took up her vocation and received a Master’s in Hindustani Classical Music and fully devoted herself to the art form.
Innovating Within Tradition
Akanksha is not so much averse to innovation, while deeply classically rooted. She effortlessly mixes genres into the mix of ghazals, thumris, and even old Bollywood tunes into the Baithaks. Her shows are not far removed from such legends as Lata Mangeshkar, she incorporates stories and historical contexts in her versions and makes each session an intriguing one, with education and emotions in equal measure.
Educator and Mentor
In addition to making music, Akanksha is passionate about developing the future generation of ordinary musicians. A School of Music and Art, through its platform, provides both online as well as offline training to make classical music available for all. Her teaching philosophy stresses the need for a personal guru and the need for discipline in the form of regular practice so that the student will understand the art – and that it is not a shallow art.
A Personal Odyssey of Resilience
Akanksha’s journey has not been smooth going. Suffering from Celiac disease she found solace in the peace of the landscapes of Himachal Pradesh. This reflection and punishing practice not only helped her come back but also became more intimate with the music. Today, she finds it in nature, too, sometimes accompanied by her devoted companion Olive.
