Nehru’s Vision for a Modern India

Jawaharlal Nehru saw education as the most powerful tool in the hands of the government for the making of a modern, democratic, and progressive India. For Nehru, education was not only limited to the four walls of the classroom — it was a way of fighting against poverty, tearing down social barriers, and opening up the world for everyone. He stressed that a well-educated society was a precondition for a powerful nation that could master science and live in social harmony.

Scientific Temper and Its Importance

One of Nehru’s convictions was the need for the entire population to be scientifically minded. He wanted education to foster reasoning, inquisitiveness, and critical thinking. He was of the opinion that the only way for India to advance was when the masses adopted a rational approach and discarded the old ways of thinking. He would go on to say that the schools and colleges should be the ones that would constantly encourage the students to ask, to try, and to think in an unbiased way.

Nehru was a gifted visionary who brought about a host of young and energetic educational and scientific institutions in India. To him, the universities and research centres were the temples of modern India where the young minds would be free to think and serve the nation. He was always advocating for higher education in such areas as science, engineering, agriculture, and so forth, on the grounds that India would need competent professionals for the industrial and technological sectors to grow and be modern.

Nehru was in favour of making education available to all. He insisted on expanding primary schools, improving adult literacy, and developing vocational training for the youth.
