Jun 11, 2025, 10:33 IST

Ace is a 2025 Tamil romantic crime comedy movie written and directed by Aarumuga Kumar. The film stars Vijay Sethupathi, Rukmini Vasanth, and Yogi Babu and is a comedy, romance, and heist film. It opened in the theaters on May 22-23, 2025, and the buzz was created mainly because of the genre mixture and cast.

Budget
Ace has an estimated budget of about 35 crores. That consists of the cost of production, cast and crew salaries, post-production, and promotion. The brand value of Vijay Sethupathi and the popularity of the genre made the movie's expectations high in terms of commercial success.
Box Office Breakdown
Opening Weekend
Ace started slowly at the box office. It made only 1 crore net on Day 1 (May 23), which was seen as a not-so-impressive collection with regard to the cast and genre. There was, however, a 62 percent jump on Day 2 (May 24) as the collections went up to 1.62 crore net. On day 3 (May 25), it earned approx ₹1.42 crore, thereby taking its first-weekend collection to ₹4.04 crore net. The film earned over 4.9 crores on Day 4.
Week One & Beyond
As of Day 7 (May 31), Ace had grossed approximately 6.47 crore net. The film failed to sustain growth, even though it was showing a slight increase during the first week. After 9 days, the net collections were ₹7.5 crore and after 17 days, the overall earnings were only ₹8.79 crore net (approx. 10.37 crore gross). This was way below the expectations.
Hit or flop?
Having a budget of ₹35 crore, industry standards dictate that a movie has to make at least 2 to 3 times its budget to be a hit (70 105 crore). Ace failed miserably in its total box office collections and emerged as a commercial failure. Trade analysts affirmed that the movie had failed to recover the cost, both in the US and abroad.
Audience Response
Critics responded with mixed reviews, stating that the chemistry between Vijay Sethupathi and Yogi Babu, along with a few comedy scenes of the film, was good. Nevertheless, they, too,, panned the uneven tone, bland screenpla,y, and weak second half. Critical reception was reflected in the audience's reaction to tepid word-of-mouth, and low repeat factors were among the factors that caused it to fare poorly.
Conclusion
Starring a popular lead cast and with a high-concept combination of romance, crime, and comedy, Ace still did not work at the box office. The film failed to live up to industry expectations, with a final gross of less than 10 crore rupees against a 35 crore rupee budget. Mediocre reviews and poor viewer attendance were a death sentence in regards to it being a box office failure.
