Baby John Box Office Collection Day 2: Varun Dhawan's Film Struggles to Gain Momentum
On its second day at the box office, Baby John, headlined by star Varun Dhawan, really hit rock bottom. After registering a rather dismal average opening of ₹11.25 crore on Christmas day, it finally dived down to ₹4.5 crore on Thursday. That brought the total domestic collections of the film so far up to ₹15.75 crore, according to industry tracker Sacnilk.
The action-drama had an overall occupancy of only 11.09% on Thursday. Audiences stayed away on this day. The activity continued within the Delhi-NCR region with 1,040 shows, but occupancy turned out to be only 8.75%. In Mumbai, the occupancy was slightly better at 12.75% against the 793 shows. Meanwhile, previous entries like Pushpa 2: The Rule and Mufasa: The Lion King were not letting go from their grip in the box office race, having collected ₹9.6 crore and ₹7 crore respectively on that same day.
Produced by Atlee and directed by Kalees, Baby John is a pan-Indian action film and a remake of Vijay's Theri. The movie, which also features Keerthy Suresh, Wamiqa Gabbi, and a cameo by Salman Khan, has been made on a reported budget of ₹180 crore. However, it has struggled to perform well, possibly due to Theri’s widely accessible dubbed version or audience rejection of Varun Dhawan in this role.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh noted that Baby John benefited from the Christmas holiday but failed to meet pre-release expectations, which projected a first-day collection between ₹17 crore and ₹20 crore. The film faced stiff competition from Pushpa 2 in mass circuits and Mufasa in urban centers, which impacted its overall performance.
Varun Dhawan, whose last solo hit was Judwaa 2 in 2017, has faced a series of underwhelming box office performances. His previous films, Bhediya and Jugjugg Jeeyo, opened with ₹7.48 crore and ₹9.28 crore, respectively, but managed to achieve lifetime collections of ₹66.65 crore and ₹85.03 crore.
Up next, Varun will star alongside Janhvi Kapoor in Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, directed by Shashank Khaitan and produced by Dharma Productions.
