Ruhaan travels with Meera, the king’s daughter, to Rakht Ghat under the belief that he is the reincarnation of a beloved prince, Debendra Nath, who vanished from the kingdom centuries ago. According to local lore, on Durga Ashtami, a reincarnated royal will return to finally put an end to the haunting of Manjulika, a spirit believed to be trapped in the palace since her tragic death 200 years prior. Mira promises Ruhaan a generous reward if he can help bring her family back to the palace, and he in turn brings peace back to the village.

Initially skeptical of a ghost, Ruhaan soon realizes there is more here. As he becomes the village’s symbol of hope, Ruhaan works to bring the legend to life and gain the trust of the villagers. Meera, however, has plans to sell the palace, hoping the proceeds will pull her family out of poverty. With Ruhaan’s presence, the family moves back into the palace, setting the stage for a series of eerie events.

Finally, a dramatic scene comes that requires Ruhaan to recognize the real Manjulika. The forlorn-looking Dipali, to be replaced by Mandira, and the punk-looking Malika, who seemed very much familiar as a woman of the modern world, are the sisters who are destined to fight the spirit of Debendra for the fourth time. The movie ends up with the sisters pleading for mercy adding that the betrayal that killed Debendra was justifiable. Taking this apology, the spirit is satisfied at last and releases the curse which has been going in circles in the palace.

Who is Manjulika?

A real question arises: who exactly is Manjulika? Though the story suggests that either Malika or Mandira (a new person interested in buying a palace) may be involved with the ghost, the twist reveals a deeper story. She was born out of wedlock a hundred years ago, Debendranath was a legitimate heir to the throne, though he felt imprisoned by expectations about his true identity. Privately, Devendra loved dancing and often felt trapped in a body against his conscience. Unfortunately, Devendra’s sisters Manjulika and Anjulika used this knowledge against him and conspired to frame him in front of the court. Humiliated and rejected, the king ordered the execution of Devendra, who received a curse that would trap his soul in the palace forever.
