Bionic (2024) Movie Ending Explained

Afonso Poyart's Bionic is a dystopian sci-fi thriller that takes place in a not-so-distant future in Brazil where athletes compete wearing robotic prosthetics and with Neural Interface Modules (NIMs), which are essentially, brain control interfaces, that augment them and even allow athletes to raise their cognitive capacity. Now, augmented Paralympic athletes dominate sports, and there as two types of humans: enhanced and non-enhanced. Bionic incorporates defined themes of athletic ambition, sibling rivalry, and cyber warfare with a plot that becomes increasingly cloudy along the way.
The plot begins with Heitor, a revolutionary who is mobilizing natural athletes (without enhancements) who are barred from competing in official Paralympic sporting events. When Heitor's brother dies while conducting a diamond heist to fund the revolution, Heitor meets new allies. He then targets Maria, a talented athlete who has been held back by Gabi, her bionic sister, as a recruit.
Maria's mother was a natural athlete and died before the sport's acceptance of bionics, Gabi increased her athletic ability through bionics purchased by their father. Maria, who was once well-known, is now unceremoniously tossed aside by society after the death of her mother and Gabi increasing her athletic prowess. Maria's pride and bitterness ultimately lead her to join Heitor's movement, but after she storms out of one of Gabi's celebration parties, she is hit by a car. The accident ends with Maria losing her leg and ironically, she soon joins the ranks of those she opposed.
