Overview 

In a terrifying incident, a toxic gas assault on a Kolkata Metro Rail carriage results in the fatalities of all commuters aboard. Two years later, Vidya Bagchi (Vidya Balan), a pregnant software developer, arrives in Kolkata from London during the Durga Puja celebrations, determined to locate her lost husband, Arnab Bagchi. She is supported by police officer Satyoki "Rana" Sinha (Parambrata Chatterjee). Vidya claims that Arnab was in Kolkata on an assignment for the National Data Center (NDC), but initial investigations reveal that no such individual was employed there.

Agnes D'Mello, the NDC's head of human resources, implies that Arnab bears a similarity to former staff Milan Damji (Indraneil Sengupta), and suggests examining his file in the old NDC office. Before Agnes can offer more help, she is assassinated by Bob Biswas (Saswata Chatterjee), an executioner posing as a life coverage agent. Vidya and Rana manage to secure Damji's file from the NDC office, barely escaping an encounter with Bob, who is also after the documents. Their efforts capture the attention of Intelligence Bureau (IB) agents Bhaskaran K. (Dhritiman Chatterjee) and his assistant Khan (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) in Delhi. Khan arrives in Kolkata and reveals that Damji was a rogue IB operative responsible for the poison-gas assault. Despite Khan's cautions, Vidya continues, fearing Arnab's likeness to Damji has put him in peril.

Vidya as well as Rana, they follow the location from Damji's file to flat. A local tea vendor errand boy identifies R. Sridhar, an NDC official, as a frequent visitor. Bob tries to assassinate Vidya but fails and is eliminated in a chase. Checking Bob’s phone, Vidya and Rana find an IP address that sends instructions to kill him. They infiltrate Sridhar's office to confirm the IP address, but Sridhar is electronically alerted and returns, leading to a struggle where Vidya accidentally kills him, infuriating Khan who needed him alive.

Data from Sridhar's system reveals a code leading to Bhaskaran's contact number. Vidya contacts Bhaskar, he claims to have important documents and asks for his help to find her life partner. Instead, Bhaskaran directs him to the local authorities. She receives a call from an anonymous number, threatening her to hand over the documents to see her husband alive. Khan infers the caller to be Milan Damji.

Vidya plans to meet Damji, followed by Rana and Khan.The meeting turns violent when Vidya questions Damji's ability to return her husband in exchange for the documents. During the ensuing struggle, Vidya disarms Damji using the artificial belly she had been using to fake her pregnancy and shoots him with his firearm. He escapes in the crowd, leaving Rana a thank you note and a pen drive containing Sridhar's computer data, which connects Bhaskar and takes him to jail Rana realizes that neither Vidya nor Arnababagchi was there and that Vidya had been around the police and the IB work for its own end.

Vidya is revealed to be the widow of Arup Basu (Abir Chatterjee), an IB officer and associate of Damji who died in the poison gas attack. The mission to avenge Vidya’s death was aided by retired IB officer Pratap Bajpai (Darshan Jariwala), who suspected the involvement of a top IB officer.
