Director Siruthai Siva clarified that Kangu is a very old Tamil word for "fire", and Kanguva is "a man with the power of fire"  . Crucially, he made it clear it's metaphorical, not literal—Suriya's character doesn't have superpowers

Film Concept & scale

The film mixes period (c. 1070 AD) and contemporary (2024) narratives, with Suriya playing both a warrior prince Kanguva and modern-day agent Francis. It was declared to be one of his most ambitious, multilingual (10 languages) and costly films, in comparison with epics such as Braveheart and The Lord of the Rings  .

Siva selected the title for its historical origins and symbolic connotation in multiple languages, which appealed to him. The movie is filmed in 3D and divided into two segments, a remarkable creative achievement on the part of the actor-director duo  .

Reception & Backlash

Pre-release buzz was massive, but word-of-mouth was divided. Suriya's commanding presence on screen seemed to have won over critics, as well as his sincerity in portrayal, but they found sloppy writing, undisciplined plot, over-the-top moments, and uneven tone. Reaction to contemporary-day issues was so diverse that producers cut ~12 minutes and lowered volume levels to enhance pace and viewer experience

Essentially, Siva and Suriya sold Kanguva as an era-spanning epic full of fire. The title is symbolic rather than fantastically promising. Though Suriya grounds the story with his intensity, the movie labors under its own weight—echoing a high concept that lost its coherence in execution.
