Theppa Samudram is a fascinating investigational thriller that borrows its inspiration from real-life incidents involving missing school girls from the village of Telangana. Chaitanya Rao, who is known for making unorthodox cinematic choices, heads the cast. The sleazy world of missing school girls from Theppa Samudram village is the path followed by this film to venture into.
Chaitanya Rao played the role of SI Ganesh, a tough, hard-boiled cop, who solves the case of missing girls. The suspect list keeps piling up as he keeps searching for clues—and among them is his father, Lawyer Viswanath, played by Ravi Shankar. Indu, played by Kishori Dhatrak, is a social worker who runs Netra Foundation and struggles fiercely for justice. Indu's rescuer auto driver, Vijay (Arjun Ambati), turns up too. The suspense thriller reaches a new level of suspense with way too many jaw-dropping facts and a spine-chilling fact that shakes the town.
Performances are impressive. Kishori Dhatrak is a find, performing so effortlessly in emotional and dance tracks. Interesting to note that her real-life father, Chaitanya Dhatrak, has played the villain of the film. Arjun Ambati gives depth to an ordinary character, and Ravi Shankar adds gravity by performing as a crafty lawyer.
The merits of the movie are its intriguing plot, brilliant direction, and suspenseful turns. The movie starts with a suspenseful tone and continues providing suspense with twists that are tactfully placed. But an unexpected supernatural turn in the interval spot could be a shock or mystery for some people. Even though the twist brings novelty, it does take something away from the central plot.
Technically, the film holds up well. Peddapalli Rohit’s music and background score heighten the tension. Cinematography by Shekhar Pochampalli effectively brings the village’s eerie mood to life. While editing could’ve been tighter in parts, the overall production quality is commendable.
Verdict: Theppa Samudram is a solid investigative thriller that mixes crime, mystery, and social commentary with a unique narrative style.
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐/5
Bottom line: A decent movie with suspenseful moments and a message of inspiration.
