There has been a lot of chatter around the frequent visits of Bollywood celebs. For Indians who grew up in the 80's & 90's, it was common to read their favorite celebs traveling to Dubai. In fact there was saying that if one wanted to spot their favorite celebs, waiting for them at the airport during the arrival of the Air India flight on Sunday was the best bet. Why were Indian celebs traveling to Dubai so frequently? Why is it still so popular among the celebs? Read our article to find out!

Dubai became the kingdom of filthy rich oil millionaires by the start of the 80's. The local citizens became millionaires overnight & had cash to literally burn. Dubai's lax rules attracted mafia dons, fugitives, corrupt politicians, corporates alike who were looking for a safe place to stash their cash & to evade the law in their country. As long as these people did not commit any crime in Dubai, they were free birds in the Emirati kingdom. Bollywood celebs used to visit Dubai for events catering to the South Asian diaspora. Their visits became more frequent after mafia don - Dawood Ibrahim shifted his base in the late 80's. Banks & financial institutions weren't allowed to finance movies back then & the mafia was flush with cash. Dawood Ibrahim, one of India's biggest mob bosses, was one of the biggest financiers of movies in the late 80's & till the mid 90's.

Late 80's - Mid 90's

There have been reports of almost all the top celebs except Amitabh Bachchan visiting Dubai in this era. Most events were organised by Dawood's henchmen. The mafia don was fond of Bollywood celebs & spent huge sums on them. His cronies used to call up these celebs & ask them to come to Dubai to visit the don. The don used to host lavish parties & invite guests for these parties. The celebs used to perform at these parties & return with suitcases full of cash. Amitabh Bachchan is rumored to be one of the few celebs who refused to visit Dubai. His close connections with the Gandhis shielded him from any annoyance.

But apart from performing at events, the mob bosses also used to invite actresses to bed them. Dawood's brother Anees is once rumored to have invited Madhuri Dixit, India's biggest female star in the 90's. She was aware of the real intentions behind the invite. She flatly refused to visit. As per Hussain Zaidi, a noted crime journalist & novelist, the mafia dons used to bed top actresses. The actresses were more than happy to bed these gangsters in return for plum acting projects. The gangsters used to decide on the casting for movies they were bankrolling, which was a major share of the movies that were being made back then. Dawood's gang controlled Bollywood & could make or break careers in Bollywood. They used to throw themselves at these gangsters for the sake of their careers. A Miss India Universe pageant winner was rumored to have bedded one of the notorious gangsters back then. When asked about her underworld connections, she flatly refused. Mandakini was rumored to be Dawood's girlfriend. Monica Bedi was dating Abu Salem - a part of D-gang.  Anil Kapoor, Govinda, Aditya Pancholi, Sanjay Dutt, Salman Khan, Jackie Shroff are some of the big names who were frequently visiting Dubai back then.

Apart from the mob bosses, the Dubai shaikhs, too, were a major pull for the female actors. The Dubai-based shaikhs weren't averse to spending millions of cash on these Bollywood stars in return for sexual pleasures. If some rumors are to be believed, almost every actress, right from the biggest to the struggling ones, has bedded these Dubai-based shaikhs for money. Brand endorsements weren't as lucrative as they are today & actors had only a few years before their stardom faded away. They believed in making hay while the sun shines.

But by the late 90's the mafia was eliminated from the streets of Mumbai. Dawood Ibrahim became a fugitive don & a terrorist. While many celebs like Sanjay Dutt, Aditya Panscholi, and Salman Khan were accused of continuing to have close equations with Dawood Ibrahim & his men, most celebs distanced themselves from him.

The mafia was rumored to still have stakes in the highly lucrative Bollywood events business. The wealthy Indian diaspora is open to spending premium amounts for the tickets to events in which top Bollywood stars performed.

2000's Till Date

While the mafia isn't as active in the movies anymore, celebs are rumored to still visit Dubai to meet the fugitive don. Mika Singh is rumored to have performed for the don at a family wedding. He was paid an astronomical sum to perform for the don. Johnny Lever also performed for the don & even mocked Vande Mataram during his stand-up act.

While the days of shady gangsters bedding Bollywood actresses are a thing of the past, Dubai-based shaikhs continue to patronize Bollywood actresses. One B-grade Bollywood actress was rumoredly paid a whopping 350cr in return for becoming a shaikh's keep. A TV actress who was a dance reality show contestant was paid 200cr by another such shaikh. These Dubai-based shaikhs continue to remain immensely wealthy & love Bollywood actresses.

If some sources are to be believed, there is barely any actress, including the A-list names, who will refuse a Dubai visit. Most of them have been through the casting couch to bag acting projects, sleeping with a wealthy man for money is not as appalling as one would imagine.

It is not uncommon to see B-grade actresses & TV stars frequently seen traveling to Dubai. Most of these celebs are broke & need sugar daddies to live their extravagant lifestyles. The shaikhs make them sign NDA's. They can never claim sexual abuse or even speak about these sexual encounters. If you are hearing about an actress visiting Dubai too often, it is safe to assume that she has been invited by a Dubai based shaikh. Events are not organized as frequently as they want you to believe.
