MM

In an exclusive interview, Varun Dhawan opened up about his experience playing a stuntman in Citadel: Honey Bunny and how his co-star, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, boosted his confidence for the role.

Almost a decade after his intense performance in Badlapur, Varun Dhawan is returning to action with renewed vigor. This year, 2024, marks a turning point as he stars in two action-packed projects back-to-back: Citadel: Honey Bunny, a period spy thriller series by Raj & DK, and Baby John, an action thriller from director Kalees, co-produced by Atlee, known for Jawan.

Reflecting on Samantha’s influence, Varun mentioned that her belief in him has been pivotal. He recalls reaching out to Raj & DK in 2021 to praise The Family Man season 2 and suggested Samantha as his co-star for Citadel. "Samantha’s conviction gave me the assurance that I'm on the right path," Varun shared, acknowledging her impact on his current action projects. Samantha agreed, stating, "It feels like this year is Varun’s moment in action."

In Citadel: Honey Bunny, Varun portrays Bunny, a daring stuntman who, much like Hollywood's classic action doubles, has a role that mixes real stunts with high stakes, echoing movies like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and The Fall Guy. Varun revealed that these stunt characters carry “main character energy” with their fearless, on-the-spot stunts.

Growing up on film sets in the 90s with his father, David Dhawan, Varun had a unique insight into the world of stunt performers, fueling his performance as Bunny. He described them as “adrenaline junkies” who thrive on their high-risk job.

Citadel: Honey Bunny is set to premiere on Prime Video India on November 7, with Varun’s role as a stuntman paving the way for what he calls his “action era.” His journey in action continues in Baby John, where he hopes to leave a lasting impact as a true mass-action hero.
