Traditional Dress of Goa Men & Women
Goa is a state of colorful culture and coastal beauty, but another feature it detects is its heritage of traditional clothes that depict the influence of Indo-Portuguese origin, tribal life, and tropical environment. The ancient clothing characteristic of Goan men and women has some minor differences when it comes to Hindu people, Christians and tribes, but still has the thread of culture that brings the aspects of comfort, colour and person.
Goan Women Traditional Dress
1. Pano Bhaju
It is the best representative of traditional attire of Hindu Goan women: a blouse (choli) and a long wrapper-like saree made of fine cotton or silk, called pano. It is most commonly used when paired with a bhaju (jacket) and in the holidays and customary occasions.
2. Nav-vari saree/Kashti
The Nav-vari saree which is an adaptation of dhoti style is a 9-yard saree and is worn by most women in rural Goa. The waistband, which runs around the waist is the kashti that gives it working comfort during fieldwork or even at home.
3. Catholic Influence - Gowns and Skirts
The Christian Goan women and particularly in the colonial period wore beautiful western type gowns or long skirts and puffed sled blouses that are still held in the celebratory events such as the Feast of St. Francis Xavier or the Christmas dances that may be accompanied by the use of lace and embroidery too.
4. Tribal Dresses
Women of the tribes such as Kunbi wear Kunbi saree which is generally red and minimal white checking and is put in a special manner with no petticoat and a knot is tied in the shoulder. It is painted in ornaments with customary jewelry and headscarfs.

Goan Men Traditional Dress
1. Dhoti and Shirt / Kurta
The traditional Hindu Goan male attire consists of simple dhoti, either white or saffron colored with a kurta or a loose shirt and is worn during prayers and religious festivals.
2. Western Wear Christian Influence
As a result of Portuguese colonization, male Christians wore western-style trousers, hats and waistcoats. During festivals they can be spotted in suits of formal and colorful half-sleeved shirts paired off with cotton trousers mostly during the occasions and wedding.
3. Men Tribal Dressing
Male members of Goan tribes dress in loin cloths, handwoven wraps made of cotton or shorts with no upper cloth or a simple vest. They also use headgear, beads, and anklets during tribal dances or festival to represent their heritage.
Jewels and accessories
The Goans (both men and women) are traditionally adorned with silver and gold. Women wear mangalsutra, bajuband (armlets), nose ring and bangles whereas tribal cultures wear rudraksha beads or earrings in men.
Conclusion
The coastal state of Goa is an amalgamation of its multicultural heritage, shown exceptionally well through the dressing style of Goa customs, which lie in the spectrum of tribal and Hindu to Portuguese-Christian. The colorful Kunbi sarees, the classy western gowns and even the simple dhotis; the Goan clothes transport the identity, traditions and the coastal living of the region. Although modern wardrobes dominate the contemporary world, traditional wears continue to place a special place in the festivals, dances, and cultural events.
