Are you totally clueless about makeup? Our article on a basic guide to makeup by beauty expert Sarika has all the answers!
In my experience of wearing make-up for years now, I am writing my thoughts on the art of applying make-up. However, this may not be the perfect formula for everyone, as it's a personal viewpoint and experience I've had, and I am merely sharing trivia from my experiences! You might have a completely different take on makeup altogether, and I respect that. However, this blog is for women that might need a guideline for wearing basic make-up. You can follow what works from you!
Being well-groomed and is very integral for a woman and her clothes & accessories are key factors. But to add to the final touches to one’s ensemble make – up is important. There are many nuances to the wearing make-up, let’s start with the basics!
In this blog, I am sharing some make-up looks I've done for myself and sharing how it's done. Ensure your facial skin has been cleansed and toned before applying make – up. Start by cleansing and moisturizing your face. Then, use a face primer, it helps your makeup stay on longer and gives an even base.
Firstly, start by dabbing a coat of foundation – either liquid or one that sticks onto clean skin. Ideally, the foundation gives flawless full coverage with a brush and a medium-buildable coverage with a sponge. The shade of foundation has to be similar to your skin tone, else your face can end up looking different from the rest of your body and can make the skin look grey after a while.
Following this, coat your face with a compact using a sponge, or a fluffy powder brush. Compact sets the base of the face and adds a healthy glow to the skin. It's important to know that the application of the compact powder goes in after the concealer and foundation. Dab the product, pat well onto the skin and then blend it evenly. This technique provides coverage and the skin looks flawless. Start by applying it from the center of the face and use long strokes followed by a sweeping motion. Blend it evenly throughout the face and neck area. You must apply the compact powder on the neck as well as other visible areas. Additionally, you can use a concealer where you need coverage such as around the mouth, under the eyes, or any discolored portion of the face.
Next, the focus is on the eyes wherein you can use a liquid eyeliner applicator & draw a thin outline on the upper eyelids, depending on the thickness you desire. As a rule, thick lines are used on eyes to make them look small and vice versa. This is followed by mascara & kohl pencil, in the color you want. Winged lines are in vogue these days, and is used by makeup artists to give a chic and sleek look.
In eye makeup, a smoky eye is an all-time favorite. Health and Glow outlets and many brands in malls stock double-sided #eyepencils, wherein you can apply the eye pencil on your upper eyelids and use the brush applicator to spread it across. The picture below I've applied liquid gold glitter and copper eye shadow, and kohl to highlight the eyes making it the focal point of the face. This is followed by pink lip gloss and #bronzer on my cheeks. I guarantee you this look will make heads turn wherever you are!
Step 1: Eyebrows
Step 2: Eye Shadow
When applying eye shadow first, dust color onto your lids, then follow up with a crease color. Finally dab some highlighter along your brow bone.

You can choose between a neutral eye makeup look for day time and a shimmery nighttime eye makeup look.
Step 3: Eyeliner
You can apply eyeliner before mascara but after eye shadow. Ideally, you can use a waterproof eyeliner pencil. A few rules to keep in mind are, start by prepping and priming your eyelids. Also to ensure the liner lasts use an eye primer. Next gently pulling your eyelid, apply liner in small dashes from the center of the eyelid to the outer corner of the eye. Use the pencil’s point for a super thin line or more of the pencil’s side for a thicker line. Once you’ve connected all the dashes, creating one smooth line, use the same technique to fill in the liner from the inner lash line to the center.
In case you want a smoky eye look, clean your lower lash line by applying a pencil liner to the lower lash line after you’ve already applied eyeshadow and liner to the upper lash line. Next, apply the liner from the center of the lower lash line outwards in small dashes. Once all those dashes create one smooth line, go back to the inner corner of your eye and create a line from there to the center.
Step 4: Mascara
The final step in your eye makeup application routine? That should be mascara! Now you're all set to mesmerize everyone with those mysterious eyes!
Next to the most important aspect of makeup are the lips. Studies carried out at Manchester University reveal that full lips are the most attractive feature in a woman, especially if she’s wearing red lipstick. In the first ten seconds after meeting a lady for the first time, the average chap will spend more time gazing at her mouth. If she’s applied lipstick, he’ll find it difficult to look away, holding his attention for 6.7 seconds and red keeping him fixated for 7.3 seconds. For centuries, women have painted their lips red and this practice dates back as far as the Ancient Egyptians who commonly used red lipstick and rouge to enhance their attractiveness.
Now the next look I am sharing with you is bold and can be achieved using a shade that’s bright and loud. In the picture above, I’ve worn a deep bold red shade i.e. a 16-hour long stay lipstick with a shade of transparent gloss over my lips for a bold and over the top look. Plus a gold bronzer on my cheeks, and a heavy coat of foundation. It takes less than 20 minutes and can be rounded off with straight hair that’s blow-dried and brushed or a tight high ponytail with bangs on your forehead to look glam! However, it’s not advisable to wear this look during the day.
I'll talk more about lipsticks now. Considering the varied preferences of consumers these days, various brands are offering a palette of stunning hues.
They range from transparent, coral, blue, green, white, silver, grey, yellow, brown, maroon, orange to nude, purple, black, multi-color, gold, etc. Added to that, women can also choose from various finishes of lipsticks, some of them being matte, glossy, creme, satin, shimmer, metallic, natural, luminous, glitter, duo-chrome and tinted. And if that’s not enough, lip liners are available to define and shape one’s lips.
Here's a simple guide on wearing lipstick. Firstly, prep your lips by
exfoliating with a soft, damp toothbrush and hydrating it with a nourishing lip balm. Secondly, apply a base, in case you're worried about discoloration or an uneven lip tone. Use a concealer shade that matches your lip color and dab a little on with a flat brush or a small fluffy brush. Apply some compact to seal the base.
Next apply a lip liner to define, reshape, and perfect the contours of your lips. It also ensures your lipstick doesn't get messy. To make the cupid’s bow more prominent, you can create an ‘X’ shape on your upper lip, just below the cupid’s bow.

Now apply lipstick, here you can use a lip brush and apply evenly all over your lips. Apply it within the corners of your lined lips. Go coat by coat and intensify the color. Usually, one good coat of a quality lipstick will suffice.

And finally, to add definition, You can use a small concealer brush and work on the edges to correct the shape of your lips. And to get a perfect pout, add a subtle hint of lip gloss.
Always blot using a tissue to remove excess product and even out the texture.
Now let's decode the look which is worn during the day. You can use floral pink and a light-colored foundation, lipstick, and blush. You can also add some pancakes on the face and hands to don the look of cinema actors. Next, we move onto the eyes, with a light eyeliner application plus mascara and kohl pencil. You can also use a pink eye shadow for a soft and delicate look, that will make you look feminine. You can also add a candy pink shade of gloss to seal the look. This takes less than 15 minutes and can be worn for a lunch with the girls, a shopping outing, or a lunch date with your lover. So go on, fashionably kick-start your day!
Next, you must know the art of applying blush! Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to apply the blush.
The first step is to choose the right shade of your face. Ensure the color suits the complexion of your skin. If you are fair-skinned choose colors like peach, pink, or sheer plum, all of which enhance the skin tone. For a medium skin tone, choose mauve or apricot color as it will add more depth and a subtle warm effect on your cheeks. And for a dark complexion can go for bold colors such as brick or tangerine.

Next, you must choose a #blusher in powder or cream formula according to your skin type. If you have normal to oily skin, use powder blush to get a matte finish and for dry skin, use cream blush. Apply the blush to your cheeks, in case your using powder and for a cream blush, dot the product on your cheeks using your finger, then use a makeup sponge to blend it well. This will give you a natural look.
Now depending on your face shape, follow different ways to apply blush. In case of a heart-shaped face apply in a ‘C’ shape from the top of your temple to the cheekbone. The color will be subtle near the temple and more prominent near the cheekbone area.
In case of a round face, suck in your cheeks, and sweep the brush underneath your cheekbones. This adds definition to your face, and don’t apply blush to the apples of your cheeks as it makes your face look rounder. And in case of a square face, use circular motions and apply blush directly to the apples of your cheeks to draw attention
to the round part of your face. (Follow the image above as a basic guide for blush strokes as per your face shape). Voila! Your make-up is complete now! Feeling like a diva?
Lastly, the most important trend in makeup is wedding looks. I’ve done these myself for a lot of weddings I've had attended in the past few years of family and friends. Here I’ve followed the standard procedure of prepping one’s face with concealer and foundation, and the shades are bright pink lipgloss to match the pink salwar kameez outfit (traditional Indian outfits) plus a pink stole.
The other looks are variations of #lipgloss to attain a glam look and accessorized with dressy earrings and beaded pink stole, along with silver sandals and a trendy clutch.
To further explore this look at yet another function, I’ve used pink transparent gloss coupled with pink eye shadow. The learning here is to ensure the makeup matches the outfit and accessories, to achieve a well-coordinated appearance.
Having stated the above, it’s important to know that there are no mandatory rules to be followed. One can use what works for you from this!
Therefore the rising awareness of beauty products and the premium on personal grooming, consumption patterns, and lifestyles, plus an increase in purchasing power are all factors that will boost the beauty industry by leaps and bounds. Women today are highly conscious of their appearance and want to look their best, in professional and personal situations, therefore creating a huge demand for make-up in the markets today. The markets today indicate healthy growth in the future and beauty is on its way to becoming one of the most profitable businesses in India.
And finally, it’s important to understand that what works for someone else, may not work for you. Makeup needs to be worn as per one’s individual likes and occasion. And these are things that adorn us on the outside, what finally matters is how happy we are from within at the end of it all! There’s nothing more charming than a genuine smile and a warm persona along with all the makeup. So go ahead enjoy the journey of grooming like the way I am.
