Home Remedies - Banish Your Dry Skin Blues



These home remedies by beauty expert Sarika is all that is required to get rid of your dry skin problems. Dry skin will never be an issue ever again!






Feel itchy all the time? Your skin feels tight and flaky? You have got dry skin and you will have to do something to change this condition, else you will be heading for serious skin infections if this is not cured soon enough. You don’t have to rush to a dermatologist and burn a hole in your pocket with expensive treatments and medications. I am sharing some simple and effective home remedies to erase dry skin and get smooth, soft, and velvety skin!

Firstly let’s understand what causes dry skin. A decrease in fatty acids in the skin, which is responsible for locking the moisture and keeping the skin soft and supple causes dry skin. Some of the common reasons for dry skin are:-

  1. Changes in the weather, esp in cold and winter months

  2. Dry air in semi-arid countries of the world

  3. Heaters and hot showers

  4. Chlorinated water in swimming pools

  5. Harsh chemicals in soaps and detergents

  6. Excessive usage of soaps and cleansers

I have shared some homemade remedies which can be easily whipped up in your kitchen, with ingredients easily available in your kitchen!



1. Natural Face Moisturizer


This cream has chamomile which has anti-inflammatory properties with softening and smoothening effect on dry skin, while the almond oil and beeswax provide nourishment to your skin and prevent drying.

Ingredients you need are:-

· 1 teaspoon chamomile tea (or dried chamomile flowers)

· ½ cup of water

· 1 tablespoon lanolin

· 1 tablespoon beeswax

· ½ cup sweet almond oil

· 1 vitamin A capsule

· 1 vitamin E capsule

· 3 drops geranium essential oil

Simmer the chamomile tea in the water for 10 minutes and strain it in a double boiler melt the lanolin and let the mixture cool down. Add the chamomile mixture to this. Add the vitamin oil to this concoction and keep stirring and finally add the essential oil. Thoroughly mix it till you attain a creamy texture. Transfer this mixture to a glass jar and store it in a cool and dark place. Voila! Now you're ready to massage on your body with this magical potion!

2. Day Cream


Avocado and almond oils contain UV filters that protect your skin from the harmful UV rays while keeping it moisturized. The essential oils (lavender and peppermint) also have a sun protection factor. These oils protect your skin from UV rays and keep your skin healthy.

Ingredients you need are:-

· 3 tbsp sweet almond oil

· 1 tbsp avocado oil

· 3 tbsp beeswax

· 2 drops lavender essential oil

· 2 tbsp mineral water

· Few drops peppermint essential oil

Gathered all the ingredients? Now let’s get started! Melt the beeswax and the oils in a double boiler and heat the mineral water. Gradually add it to the molten beeswax and oil mix and keep stirring all along. Once it heats up, remove it and let it cool down. Now combine the essential oils in the concoction and whip again. Pour into a glass jar and store it in a cool, dry place. Now you’ve got a weapon against dry and itching skin finally!

3. Moisturizer


The main ingredient shea butter has healing and moisturizing properties, plus it has vitamins A, D, and E which nourishes your skin and heals dry skin issues. And apricot seed oil keeps your skin moisturized.

Ingredients you need are:-

· 3 tbsp shea butter

· 1 tsp vitamin E oil

· 1 tsp aloe vera gel

· 3 tsp apricot seed oil

· 5 drops helichrysum essential oil

· 5 drops of myrrh essential oil

· 3 drops clary sage essential oil


Got all the ingredients? Great! Now first melt the shea butter in a double boiler and let it cool down. Mix the butter and add the oils and aloe vera gel, and keep stirring. Keep stirring till it attains a creamy consistency and stores the cream in a glass container. Voila! Now you're all set to conquer dry skin!



4. Hibiscus Moisturizer


Ingredients you need are:-

· 2 tbsp hibiscus tea

· 1 cup extra virgin coconut oil

Get started by grinding the hibiscus tea into powder, and melt the coconut oil. Combine the hibiscus tea powder in the oil and cover it for a while. Strain the oil and separate the tea from the oil. Let the mixture cool down until it solidifies. Whip it well in a mixer for about a minute or two. You’ll see it turn into a pinkish color! Store the cream in a glass jar now.

Interestingly, Africans use hibiscus pulp for healing wounds and soothing skin. The anthocyanins and antioxidants in it enhance the health of the skin. While the coconut oil is calming and soothing impact and keeps it moisturized. This simple and easy to make DIY moisturizer is guaranteed to give your skin a luxurious, moisturized feeling.


5. Rose Petals Face Pack

Rose petals have anti-inflammatory properties that help soothe dry skin and have been a skincare remedy for decades, while oats have a moisturizing effect on dry skin.


Ingredients you need are:-
· 1 rose flower

· 1 tsp ground oats

· 1 cup of water

Crush the rose petals and add the oats to this along with enough water to get a paste of medium consistency. Apply the face pack and keep it on for 10-15 minutes. Once it has dried, rinse your face. For added benefits, wipe your skin with a cotton pad or cotton ball soaked in rose water. This can be done once a week.


6. Jojoba Oil


This magical oil softens the skin and eliminates flakiness, besides growing new skin cells. It has anti-inflammatory properties to soothe the skin and acts as a skin barrier repairing agent. Jojoba oil also has anti-aging and wound healing properties.

Ingredients you need are:-

· 1/2 tsp jojoba oil

· 2 cups warm water

· Washcloth

Soak the washcloth in warm water and place it on your face. Keep it on your face for 5-7 minutes, and then remove it. Massage the jojoba oil into your skin using gentle, circular movements and keep massaging in upward motions for a few minutes. Let the oil soak in and then wipe off the excess oil with the washcloth. Please ensure the water should not be too hot, else, it can scar your skin.

7. Watermelon Face Pack

It’s summertime and we are all relishing watermelon fruit all day, but did you know that it has plenty of beauty benefits? From making your skin soft and glowing to fighting your rashes and reducing the signs of aging, the list is endless. Watermelon brings back lost moisture in your skin. The antioxidants and high water content of a watermelon will boost the moisture in your skin, making your skin glow. It is also rich in a variety of skin-friendly vitamins. This face pack will leave your skin moisturized and hydrated.

Ingredients you need are:-

· 1-2 tbsp watermelon juice (freshly extracted)

· 1 tsp honey

Mix the fruit juice and honey, and apply the mixture to the face and let it sit for 10 minutes. Rinse off with water. You can also include watermelon in your diet for the best results.

8. Strawberry Face Pack

These conical beauties are irresistible, right from its heady fragrance to the sexy hue to the juicy deliciousness, there’s a reason why strawberries are everyone’s favorite fruit. I’ll tell you why a part of your shopping basket this season, for reasons other than making a strawberry pie!

They are not just pretty to look at but also a powerhouse of essential nutrients that do wonders for health and beauty. This luscious fruit contains protein, vitamin C, manganese, folate, potassium, magnesium and vitamin K, plus rich in antioxidants and polyphenols that protect your skin from UV damage and lipid peroxidation


The ingredients you need are:-

  • A box of strawberries

  • 1 cup of honey

Mash a few strawberries with a fork until it turns into a smooth paste. Add a tablespoon of honey and apply this mask for 15 minutes and wash with warm water. Honey is an antioxidant that helps to fight skin impurities and acne. This pack can be applied 1-2 times a week.

9. Apple Face Pack

Apple extracts have potential anti-aging and anti-wrinkle effects. The peel contains antioxidants which help protect your skin against damage.


Ingredients you need are:-

· 2 tsp apple juice with peel

· 1 tsp honey or a few drops of glycerin


Mix the apple juice with the honey and apply the mixture to the face and leave it on for 15 minutes. Rinse the face pack off with water and pat your skin dry.


I'll share some preventive tips with you as well, to ensure you don't fall into the trap of this pesky skin problem. Some of them are mentioned below.


Dont's

· Staying for long hours in air conditioning

· Artificial tanning

· Excess caffeine intake

· Smoking

· Excess exposure to the sun

· Showering too often

· Using rough towels for drying your skin

· Using extremely hot water for bathing

· Using skincare products that contain alcohol

Do's

· Moisturize daily during the day and also on your face before going to bed and wash it off in the morning with a gentle cleanser

· Use gentle cleansers that are free of drying agents like SLS, parabens, and mineral oil.

· Use dry skin-friendly exfoliators to remove excess dry skin.

· Drink plenty of water and consume fiber-rich foods.
