Sarika Tainwala shares some home remedies that will save you the hassle of going to the salon for a suntan removal treatment!

Being a tropical country, Indian summers are something to look forward to! Some enjoy it, while some detest the sweltering heat and their skin getting tanned! Yes sun tan troubles most of us during the summer, considering how much we love our clear, glowing skin! As a woman I understand how important it is to maintain clear, spotless, glowing and most of all tan free complexion! I am sharing some beauty hacks with you, which I have tried and have seen good results with.

I come from a Marwari family and my mother, Indu Tainwala has ingrained in me the importance of taking care of my skin, by teaching me homemade remedies which can be easily concocted in the kitchen! She taught me that the best way to restore the natural beauty of skin is by using natural ingredients and products. I’ve spent my childhood summers in Coles Park, in my first home in Bangalore with her meticulously making face packs and beauty potions out of the fruits, vegetables and other ingredients available in the kitchen and learning the science behind using every ingredient and how it benefits the skin.

I am sharing an exhaustive list of home remedies in this article which you can use as part of your daily beauty ritual to remove suntan and get glowing skin.

1) Gram Flour Ubtan

Mix 1tbsp of gram flour “besan”, 1 tbsp of milk powder, 1 tbsp. of sandalwood powder, 1 pinch of turmeric, 1 tbsp of honey, 1 tbsp of lemon and 2 tbsp of milk

Combine all the dry ingredients in a bowl; add honey, milk and lemon in it. Make a consistent paste from it. Apply it on the face and body and allow it to dry. Rinse with lukewarm water. This ubtan is a careful selection of ingredients to enhance and recharge your skin’s radiance and glow.

2) Oatmeal & Buttermilk

Oatmeal has excellent exfoliating and cleansing properties. Buttermilk is rich in lactic acid which clarifies tan, softens the skin and improves skin tone.

Soak 2 teaspoons of oats in half cup of water for five minutes. Add 2-3 teaspoons of fresh, plain buttermilk to it and mix well. Add honey to make the pack more moisturizing. Combine all these ingredients to form a paste and then apply it to your face, neck, arms and other areas affected by tanning.

Apply gently in a circular motion and let it stay for about 20 minutes. Rinse with cold water. Did you ever think that oats have beautifying properties?

3) Sandalwood Ubtan

Sandalwood is an ingredient with ancient and sacred roots. It’s native to India and was popular in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. Caravans laden with rich sandalwood were a common sight centuries ago in Egypt because of its prevalence in social and religious rituals.

Regular usage of sandalwood powder helps in fighting acne-causing bacteria, exfoliates the skin, soothes sunburn, removes suntan and reduces signs of ageing.

To make this concoction, you must combine 1tbsp. of sandalwood powder, 1tbsp. of gram flour, 1 pinch of turmeric powder, raw milk and rose water. Blend them all to make a consistent paste. Apply it on your face and body and let it dry completely. Rinse with normal water. This magical concoction promises to create a visibly clear and fairer skin tone for you.

4) Insta Fairness Ubtan

If you want to get instant fairness or glowing skin, try this Ubtan. It can help in removing suntan and pigmentation, by gently exfoliating the dead skin and offering deep pore cleansing. No need to head to an expensive salon for getting an expensive treatment done. This recipe can help you get a better outcome that a salon.

Combine 1 cup bread crumbs, 2 tbsp. of wheat flour, 2 tbsp. of besan, 2 tbsp. of lemon juice, 2 tbsp. of potato juice, 2 tbsp. of cucumber juice, 2 tbsp. of milk cream and a pinch of turmeric.

Blend them together and make a paste. Apply the paste and massage it on the face and body. Let it dry completely and rinse it with lukewarm water.

Ubtans clean, hydrate and tone the skin and if used twice a week can do wonders to your skin!

5) Almond With Rose Water

Almonds are rich in Vitamins E & D. They nourish and eradicate pollutants and impurities for a glowing complexion. They are a rich source of Vitamin E which nourish the skin and heal it from sun damage. Almonds also have bleaching properties that remove tan.

Whip up a paste of almond by grinding it with rose water. Squeeze some lime juice into the paste; apply for 15 minutes and rinse! Watch yourself in the mirror after this! Love the glow?

6) Sandalwood & Turmeric

It’s a natural beautifying agent and the smell of sandalwood also immediately leads to your mood becoming pleasant. Sandalwood with its inherent cooling properties provides relief to sun damaged skin. Plus turmeric and milk each with their healing and exfoliating properties work wonderfully together to remove your skin tan.

Blend sandalwood powder in milk or coconut water, in addition to turmeric powder. Form a paste and apply on affected area for 15 minutes and rinse.

7) Saffron and milk

Saffron “kesar” is one of the most expensive spices and beauty ingredients in the world. And although saffron is found in more dishes of late, its original usage is more as a medicine and beauty aid.

Cleopatra, the epitome of beauty and the last pharaoh of Ancient Egypt, took warm baths with a quarter-cup of saffron every day.

Soak a few strands of saffron in milk for some time. Apply the milk on affected areas. To provide more moisture to the skin, saffron can be soaked in cream “malai” instead of milk. Apply it for a while and rinse. You are guaranteed to feel like royalty after this, just like the way I did!

Now skincare most not stop just at your face, you must also consider the neck region. We all know from experience that the skin tan on our neck is a stubborn one that is almost impossible to repair.

Below is a recipe to reduce tan from your neck in a jiffy!

8) Strawberries and Raw milk

Strawberries are the epitome of antioxidants, especially for people with oily skin. It is enriched with Vitamin C and alpha-hydroxy acids. The acidic properties brighten skin tone visibly. They are not just beautiful to look at and delicious to taste, but also have nutrition, health and beauty benefits. Some of the other nutrients in this luscious fruit that make it such a powerhouse include protein, vitamin C, manganese, folate, potassium, magnesium and vitamin K.

Raw milk is a natural sunscreen and has a tan removing effect, plus it moisturizes the skin. Hence, the combination of strawberries and raw milk is considered as one of the best tan removal remedies in the beauty industry today. Mash a few ripe strawberries and add a few tablespoons of milk. Blend it well to form a lump-free paste. Apply the paste to your tanned area and leave it for 20-25 minutes and rinse it with lukewarm water.

9) Orange Juice & Yoghurt

Orange juice is rich in citric acid and vitamin C which helps to revitalize the skin and removes tan. Rubbing orange juice on the face is beneficial for cleaning the clogged skin pores and good for prevention of acne, pimples, wrinkles and fine lines. Yoghurt soothes the skin and moisturises it, leaving it soft and nourished

Mix one tablespoon of yoghurt with one tablespoon of orange juice and apply the concoction for half an hour. Later rinse it with cold water. So now you know orange juice is not just good as a breakfast beverage!

Now while it’s good to maintain your skin with the above home remedies, my question is why even allow your skin to get tanned in the first place? Better to be safe than sorry right? I ensure I follow the follow to prevent my skin from tanning, try them if you can!

-After long exposure to the sun you should apply SPF 50 sunscreen lotion or blocks, lip protection, and eye creams

-Apply sunscreen when you are out, even in cloudy weather. Reapply it every two hours

-Drink at least 15 to 20 glasses of water in a day in summers. It prevents the skin from getting dry and keeps it hydrated and glowing

-Wear protective clothing, sunglasses with UV protection and take other accessories like sun hats

-If you regularly spend time exposed to sun or swim, apply protection cream every 20 minutes

-After swimming in chlorinated water, rinse your skin and hair with fresh water else it will tan more

-During summers, use water-based moisturizer in the day

As women we have myriad roles to play in our lives and a zillion responsibilities to take care of. It’s important for us to take time out to maintain our appearance and stay well groomed. There’s nothing worse than letting go and losing our beauty with age. I strongly urge all you women to invest time and energy in grooming, it pays off in the long run.
