Mumbai Under Lockdown - Has Uddhav Thackeray Really Been Effective?

Its has been almost two weeks since Mumbai has been put under a lockdown. It will be another two weeks at least before Mumbaikars will be allowed to venture out of their homes. While most have been supportive of the PM's decision to lockdown the country for 21 days, some have raised concerns over the troubles faced by the poor, especially the migrant laborers.

Some of the leaders who have been gaining a lot of positive press are Maharashtra CM - Uddhav Thackeray & Kerala CM - Pinarayi Vijayan. Modi's detractors in the media have been singing paens about the management of the crisis by the two CM's. The fact that these two states have been the most badly affected by the coronavirus outbreak seems to be lost on them.

Journos who claim to be presently surprised by CM Uddhav Thackeray's disaster management, say they are pleasantly surprised. CM Uddhav Thackeray was a reluctant CM candidate. It is rumored that his wife wanted their son - Aaditya Tahckeray to be the CM. This was not acceptable to their allies. This is what led to them suggesting Uddhav Thackeray's name for the CM's post. If news reports are to be believed, he used to work only from 2PM-5PM. He was notorious for passing on work to Deputy CM Ajit Pawar. This has led to great bonhomie between the two parties. With CM Uddhav Thackeray least interested in the day to day activities, Ajit Pawar is running the show. But If the journis are to be believed, CM Uddhav Thackeray's facebook live sessions are gaining him a lot of admiration among the citizens of Maharashtra. His way of reassuring the people is supposed to have a positive effect on the people of Maharashtra.

These very journos then go on to mock PM Modi for asking Indians to clap at 5PM on the day of the Janata Curfew or for asking citizens to light diyas on April 5th at 9PM.

While there is nothing wrong in speaking to the public via facebook live & reassuring them, where the newbie CM has been faltering is in containing the epedemic. What pushes our buttons is leftist journos praising him despite the state topping the lists of those affected by the deadly virus.

What Maharashtra needs is a CM who governs with a stern hand. The citizens of the country, have trouble following routine rules & regulations. It is a common sight to see people violate laws right in front of the cops. With Maharashtra beng in the midst of a pandemic, the CM should ideally introduce steep penalties for those violating the lockdown. UP CM Yogi Adityanath is doing a good job in this regard.

CM Uddhav Thackeray should not succumb to pressure of his "secular" allies. The case of MLA & minister Nawab Malik getting the "no burial" order by the BMC, changed sets a bad precedent.

He must not forget that his party's gamble will pay off in the long run only if he delivers. If the public find him to be incompetent, then they won't blink an eyelid before voting him out. He must not forget that ex-CM Devendra Fadnavis is itching to get back to the CM's chair.

Has CM Uddhav Thackeray handled the situation way better than Devendra Fadnavis? We don't think so.
