Warning Signs of a Stroke

A stroke is something we have all heard of. To be precise, a stroke occurs when the flow or supply of blood to your brain is reduced or interrupted. This blood supply may be interrupted in the case of a hemorrhage or a blood clot. When this happens, the brain is deprived of oxygen and other nutrients that it receives through blood, and thus, causes brain cells to die. You may be shocked to know that during a single minute of a stroke; around two million brain cells die. Yes, 2 million brain cells die every minute of a stroke. So, the longer a stroke goes unattended, the chances of brain damage or even death gradually become higher.

1. Difficulty in speech or basic confusion-

If a person is suddenly unable to speak clearly or form complete sentences, he/she might be going through a stroke. To be sure, ask the person in question to speak a simple sentence. For example, you could ask them their name and check whether or not they are able to speak in a clear sentence.


2. Numbness or weakness on one side of the body-

A sudden sense of weakness may be an indicator of many things, and not necessarily always a stroke. But feeling numb on one side of the body may be a sign of a stroke.


3. Trouble in walking or balancing-

A sudden sense of dizziness or losing balance easily may be a sign of a stroke. If you are in a doubt about a person facing a stroke, ask them to walk a few feet and observe their walk. If they are unable to walk in a straight line and/or are losing balance while walking, they may be going through a stroke.


4. Difficulty in seeing-

If a person complains about not being able to see properly either from one eye or both, they may be facing a stroke.


5. Sudden severe headache-

A headache can have many causes, but the sudden onset of a very severe headache is sometimes a sign of a stroke. Especially when the person facing it can see no possible reason for getting a headache so suddenly, it may be because they are going through a stroke.
