What Is The Jersey No Of Shubman Gill

MM

Shubman Gill, the highly successful Indian cricketer, has made a name for himself in all formats while sporting Jersey Number 77. Although this number has brought him good fortune, it wasn’t his first choice. He shared this with Star Sports Network earlier this year.

Hailing from Fazilka, Punjab, Gill initially wanted to wear Jersey Number 7, a number he also sported during his time as vice-captain of the India U-19 team, which won the World Cup. However, at that time, No. 7 was unavailable. “My jersey number is 77, and the reason behind that is when I played the Under-19 World Cup, I wanted the number 7, but it wasn’t available, so I chose two 7s,” Gill explained to Star Sports Network.

Gill’s desire for No. 7 was thwarted because the number was already taken by his teammate, Shiva Singh, a left-arm spinner who played a key role in India's U-19 World Cup victory. At the senior level, however, Jersey Number 7 is famously associated with two-time World Cup winner MS Dhoni.

Jersey Number 7 has now been retired for future players as recently pronounced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), thus paying regard to Dhoni as the second Indian cricketer in history to receive such honors after Sachin Tendulkar.

Interestingly, Gill's good friend Ishan Kishan, also a wicketkeeper-batter, wears Jersey No. 32 for India, although he would have preferred No.. 23, which he wears for Mumbai Indians in the IPL.

Although he couldn’t wear No. 7 at the international level, Gill did get to wear it for Gujarat Titans in the IPL. He moved after KKR and joined the Titans in the inaugural 2022 season, wearing his preferred number.

The number 7 shall remain a banned number for Indian cricketers in international cricket; but, Gill can still wear it in the IPL, where it is very much in use.At the start of his IPL career with KKR in 2018, no one on the team wore Jersey Number 7. Gill could have chosen it then, but he chose to stick with 77, a number that represented his achievements with the U-19 team.
