Sachin Tendulkar, widely celebrated for his cricketing prowess, is equally recognized for his humanitarian endeavors. His mother-in-law, Annabel Mehta, has lauded his compassionate nature, emphasizing that his humane qualities distinguish him from others. Mehta, who promotes the Mumbai-based NGO Apnalaya, expressed gratitude that her daughter, Anjali, married someone of such character. She highlighted Tendulkar's dedication to philanthropy, noting that he sponsors 200 underprivileged children annually through Apnalaya. Despite his hectic schedule, Tendulkar is ever active, providing financial assistance and using his memorabilia for fundraising. Mehta feels privileged to have Tendulkar as a son-in-law, not just for his cricketing exploits but also for his steadfast devotion to the betterment of society.
Aside from his affiliation with Apnalaya, Tendulkar has pursued other charitable endeavors. In 2003, he worked with UNICEF to create awareness about the prevention of polio in India. In 2010, his campaign for the Crusade Against Cancer Foundation, which was called "Sachin's Crusade Against Cancer in Children," successfully raised an impressive amount of money. Further, in November 2021, he donated retinal cameras to an Assam hospital, which helped detect retinopathy of prematurity.
Tendulkar's dedication to public health is also reflected in his work with sanitation programs. From 2008, he was involved with the work of UNICEF for promoting sanitation and hygiene. He spearheaded UNICEF's Team Swachh Bharat campaign in favor of the Clean India Mission of the Indian government. In 2014, he was appointed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as one of the ambassadors of the Swachh Bharat Mission, a position he took up enthusiastically by actively engaging himself in cleanliness campaigns and championing the cause across the country.
As the COVID-19 pandemic hit the country, Tendulkar pitched in by contributing to relief efforts and standing by the underprivileged sections of society.
In March 2020, he donated to both the Prime Minister Relief Fund and the Maharashtra Chief Minister Relief Fund. He had given financial help to 4,000 people, including Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation school children, by May 2020. He donated to the Mission Oxygen group during India's second wave of COVID-19 in April 2021 and helped in getting oxygen concentrators for needy patients.
Tendulkar's philanthropic career is an expression of an abiding dedication to using his position for the larger good, a reflection of the ethos of utilizing one's position to bring about positive change in society.
